Quick Answer

If your HVAC company is not showing in the Google Map Pack, it is almost never one thing. It is usually two or three of eight problems stacked together: a wrong primary category, an incomplete or inactive profile, stalled review velocity, no real location pages, NAP inconsistency, no links, technical faults, or a suspension or filter you have not noticed. Fix them in order of impact, starting with your Google Business Profile.

You type "AC repair near me" into Google. Three competitors show up in the map results. You are not one of them, even though you have been in business longer and do better work.

This is the single most common question HVAC owners bring to us, and the answer is almost never one thing. It is usually two or three of the eight problems below stacked on top of each other. Here they are, ranked by how often we find them in audits, with the fix for each.

First, How the Map Pack Actually Decides

Google's local algorithm weighs a specific set of signals. The 2026 Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors study, the industry's benchmark survey, breaks Map Pack rankings down like this:

Ranking signal Weight What it covers
Google Business Profile signals 32% Categories, keywords in title, completeness, activity
On-page signals 19% Your website's content, keywords, location pages
Review signals 16 to 20% Volume, recency, rating, responses
Link signals 15% Links pointing to your site and its authority
Behavioral signals 8% Clicks, calls, direction requests from your profile
Citation signals 7% Consistent listings across directories
Personalization 3% The searcher's own history

One more factor sits above all of these: proximity to the searcher. Google shows businesses near the person searching, which is why you rank differently across your own service area, and why a single ranking check from your office tells you almost nothing. The stakes are high, because BrightLocal's local business discovery research shows how many homeowners find local services straight from the Map Pack. This is exactly why we track every campaign on a rank grid across the whole service area rather than a single point.

The 8 Reasons You Are Invisible, Ranked

1. Your primary GBP category is wrong or too generic

The primary category is the highest-weighted single factor inside the biggest signal group. "HVAC contractor" versus "Air conditioning repair service" versus "Heating contractor" are different competitive races. Contractors regularly sit in the wrong race for their best service.

Fix: set the primary category to match your highest-value searched service, and add every relevant secondary category. Full detail in our GBP optimization guide.

2. Your profile is incomplete or inactive

Google's algorithm rewards profiles that look alive: photos, posts, Q&A, services listed, hours accurate, reviews answered. A profile last touched in 2023 reads as a business that might not answer the phone.

Fix: complete every field, then keep a posting cadence. Two posts a month is our floor for managed clients.

3. Your review velocity has stalled

Reviews are 16 to 20 percent of the algorithm, and recency is what Whitespark calls the most underrated factor of the moment. According to the BrightLocal local consumer review survey, 74 percent of consumers specifically look for reviews from the last three months. A profile with 200 reviews that stopped in 2024 loses to a profile with 80 reviews arriving weekly.

Fix: a review generation system, not good intentions. Ask every completed job, same day, by text. Our 5-star review system covers the exact process.

4. One generic "service areas" page instead of real location pages

Google needs on-page evidence that you serve each city, 19 percent of the algorithm is your website. A single page listing 15 towns ranks in none of them.

Fix: a real page per city with local content, and a real page per service. This is the content engine behind every campaign we run, covered in our complete local SEO guide.

5. NAP inconsistency across the web

Your name, address, and phone number exist on dozens of directories, and if they disagree, old addresses, tracking numbers, abandoned listings, Google trusts your data less.

Fix: a citation audit, corrections, and consistent rebuilds across the directories that matter for HVAC: Yelp, Angi, BBB, NATE, and the sector directories.

6. No links pointing at your site

Link signals are 15 percent of the Map Pack algorithm, and this is where most small contractors have literally nothing: no local news mentions, no supplier links, no association listings.

Fix: relevant links, built steadily. Local sponsorships, trade associations, chamber membership, supplier pages, local press. Our link building service handles this at our cost on Growth plans and above.

7. Technical problems on your website

If your site is slow, broken on mobile, or missing schema markup, the on-page 19 percent underperforms no matter how good the content is.

Fix: a technical SEO audit: speed, mobile, crawlability, HVACBusiness and LocalBusiness schema on every page.

8. A suspension or filter you have not noticed

Sometimes the profile is not underperforming, it is suppressed: a suspension you missed, a duplicate listing splitting your signals, or the possum filter hiding you because a competitor shares your building or category footprint nearby.

Fix: this needs diagnosis, not guesswork. It is one of the first things we check in an audit.

How to Diagnose Your Own Situation in 20 Minutes

  1. Search your core service from different points across your service area (or use a grid tool). Note where you appear and where you vanish.
  2. Compare your GBP against the three businesses that outrank you: categories, review count, review recency, photos, posts.
  3. Count your real location pages. If the answer is "one, and it lists every town," you have found a problem.
  4. Search your business name plus each town you have ever had an address in. Duplicates and old listings count against you.

Or skip the manual work: our free Map Pack audit pulls your grid, your citations, and your top three competitors' profiles, and tells you which of the eight problems above are yours. Report inside 48 hours, no sales pitch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get into the Google Map Pack?
It depends which of the eight problems you have. Category and profile fixes can move rankings in 4 to 8 weeks. Content, citations, reviews and links compound over 3 to 6 months. Our campaigns baseline your grid on day one and measure movement at 90 days.
Why do I show up in Maps at my office but not across town?
Proximity. Google weighs the searcher's location heavily, so visibility decays with distance from your address unless the other signals, content, reviews, links, citations, are strong enough to hold rankings further out. That is what a rank grid measures and what good local SEO extends.
Do Google Ads help my Maps ranking?
No. Ads and organic Map Pack rankings are separate systems, and spending on ads does not move your organic position. Ads can appear above the Map Pack, which is one more reason owning an organic spot matters: it is the visibility you do not pay per click for.
My competitor has fewer reviews but outranks me. How?
Reviews are only 16 to 20 percent of the algorithm. A competitor with fewer but more recent reviews, a better-optimized profile, real location pages, and stronger links will beat a higher review count sitting on a neglected profile. Recency also matters as much as volume.
Can I fix this myself or do I need an agency?
Categories, profile completeness, and review asking are absolutely DIY, and this post tells you how. Citations, location page content, links, and technical fixes are where owners run out of hours. Either way, start with a proper audit so effort goes at the right problem.
