Quick Answer

The HVAC SEO numbers that matter most in 2026: 87% of consumers use Google to evaluate local businesses (BrightLocal), organic search drives 53% of website traffic (BrightEdge), Google Business Profile signals are the biggest Map Pack ranking factor group (Whitespark), 63% of US HVAC searches now show an AI Overview (our 512-keyword study), and SEO leads cost $8 to $30 against $50 to $150 for paid ads (our Cost Per Lead Report).

Every marketing pitch you hear quotes statistics. Few tell you where the numbers came from. This page collects every HVAC SEO statistic we rely on in client work, each one linked to its original source or to our own published methodology. Local Search Behaviour Statistics

87%

of consumers used Google to evaluate local businesses, making it by far the most used platform for checking out a local company before contacting them.

Source: BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey

53%

of all trackable website traffic arrives through organic search, more than paid search, social, and display combined.

Source: BrightEdge Research, Channel Performance Report

53%

of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes longer than three seconds to load. Slow HVAC sites lose emergency callers before the page even renders.

88%

of US households used air conditioning as of the latest Residential Energy Consumption Survey. Nearly every American home is a potential cooling customer.

The pattern across every reputable behaviour study is the same: homeowners start on Google, judge you by what they find there, and abandon anything slow or thin. That is why our work starts with visibility and site speed, not with vanity metrics. If you want the behaviour data applied to your own market, our guide to local SEO for HVAC contractors walks through it step by step.

Map Pack and Google Business Profile Statistics

  • Google Business Profile signals are the single biggest Map Pack ranking factor group, accounting for roughly a third of the local pack algorithm according to the practitioner consensus in the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey. Reviews, on-page signals, and links make up most of the rest. Moz's local ranking factors research reaches the same conclusion: proximity, relevance, and prominence decide who appears.
  • Profiles with more photos earn more engagement. BrightLocal's Google Business Profile photo research found businesses with larger, fresher photo libraries receive substantially more calls, direction requests, and website clicks than sparse profiles.
  • Consumers trust what they discover on the profile itself. BrightLocal's Local Business Discovery and Trust Report shows the profile, its reviews, and its photos shape whether a searcher ever visits your website at all.

Put together, the research says the Map Pack is won on the profile, not the website. Our Google Business Profile optimisation service exists for exactly this reason, and our local HVAC SEO checklist covers the DIY version.

AI Overview Statistics for HVAC Search

These figures come from our own July 2026 study of 512 US HVAC search terms, published in full with methodology in our AI Overviews in HVAC search study.

63%

of the 512 HVAC search terms we tested now display a Google AI Overview above the traditional results.

100%

of common homeowner questions, such as why an AC is not cooling, triggered an AI Overview in our tests.

16%

of local hiring searches, such as "AC repair near me", showed an AI Overview. The Map Pack still owns the moment of hiring.

The practical read: informational queries are being intercepted by AI answers, while the searches that directly produce jobs still resolve through the Map Pack and organic listings. Your content earns citations in AI answers; your profile and site win the hiring click.

Cost Per Lead Statistics

Lead cost is where SEO and paid channels separate. From our campaign data, a mature HVAC SEO campaign generates leads at $8 to $30 each, while paid search leads for the same services typically run $50 to $150 once click costs and conversion rates are accounted for. Published advertising benchmarks, such as LocaliQ's search advertising benchmarks, consistently place home-services lead costs at the expensive end of paid search, which matches what contractors tell us about their own ad accounts.

The complete calculation, including how we count and attribute leads, what changes the range, and where Local Service Ads sit between the two, is published in our HVAC Cost Per Lead Report. For the channel comparison, see PPC vs SEO for HVAC contractors.

Seasonality Statistics

HVAC search demand is the most seasonal of any home-service trade. Heating searches peak in the first cold weeks of winter, cooling searches peak in the first heatwave of summer, and the spring and autumn shoulder seasons are when smart contractors build the visibility they harvest at the peaks. We publish the full month-by-month picture, split by heating and cooling and by US and UK markets, in our HVAC Search Demand by Season report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cite the statistics on this page?
Yes. Every statistic on this page is either sourced from published third-party research, with the original source linked, or comes from our own studies of HVAC search data. You are welcome to cite any figure with a link to this page or to the original source.
How often is this page updated?
We review and update this page yearly, and sooner if a major source publishes new research or our own studies produce new data. The dateModified field in the page metadata reflects the last review.
What is the most important HVAC SEO statistic?
For most contractors it is the share of local buying decisions that start on Google. In BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey, 87% of consumers said they used Google to evaluate local businesses. If your business is not visible there, the other statistics barely matter.
Where do the cost-per-lead figures come from?
The $8 to $30 SEO cost-per-lead range and the $50 to $150 paid ads range come from our own campaign data and published advertising benchmarks. The full methodology, including how leads are counted and attributed, is set out in our HVAC Cost Per Lead Report.
Do AI Overviews really appear on most HVAC searches?
Yes. Our July 2026 study of 512 US HVAC search terms found 63% display a Google AI Overview, including 100% of common homeowner questions. Local hiring searches such as "AC repair near me" still show AI Overviews far less often, at 16%.
